The UFC and the Martial Arts
Martial arts have indeed come a long way since the days of Bruce Lee and Jeet Kune Do. He really popularized martial arts with his films which highlighted his speed and technique. These days martial arts are seen in films around the world.
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was created in the early 1990s and has taken the martial arts to a whole new level. While there have been other competitions, nothing has demonstrated the dedication that can be seen in the UFC.
Different styles and weight classes were paired together in the beginning of the UFC.
These mixed parings often yielded exciting results. Royce Gracie from Brazil was the first UFC champion. He introduced the world to Brazilian Jui-Jitsu. Weighing less than 200 pounds Gracie was able to dominate opponents three times his size using this form of martial art. No wonder it quickly became regarded as the best.
UFC 2 and 4 were also won by Gracie. His dominance really served to open the eyes of many in the sport. Gracie would run into a very tough fighter in UFC 3, although he did not lose. His appearance in UFC 5 against Ken Shamrock ended in a draw.
While no other fighter has dominated like Gracie, many have done very well. Some of the top names include Oleg Taktarov, Ken Shamrock, Matt Sylivia, Matt Hughes, and Dan Severn. Matt Hughes is considered the best fighter in the world in the welterweight class.
The UFC has made a huge impact in the world of mixed martial arts (MMA). In the beginning these fights had no rules or judges, just fighters going until the end or the referee threw in the towel. Three fights were needed to win the championship in the tournament style fights.
Changes have been made to the UFC over the years, including the introduction of judges and the halting of the tournaments. The fans loved the fact that the fight went to one on one. Another change has been the implementation of a time limit, with non title fights consisting of three 5 minute rounds and title fights having five 5 minute rounds.
Sometimes the judges will need to decide the winner of the fight when there is no submission or knockout. At each different UFC there is a new set of three judges. Referees are there to protect fighters when they can not defend themselves.
The UFC has increased in popularity with the changes to the rules. These days it is more popular than ever before. In fact martial arts are fast becoming one of the worlds most popular sports.
