Tae Kwon Do Belt System
The colored belts used in Taekwondo ranking each have a special meaning that instructs students as to their increasing knowledge in the sport. They are a great way to give the stylist some visual representation of their progression.
The belts represent both the growth of the student and the advancement in rank within the style. A students movement through the different ranks and colored belts will depend on their knowledge and how quickly they can master the necessary techniques and forms.
Below we will discuss the meaning behind the different colored belts in Taekwondo ranking.
White Belt The white is a sign of the beginning, or birth, of the stylist. Those who wear white belts have just begun their study of Taekwondo and are trying to obtain the knowledge necessary to move up.
Yellow Belt This signifies new strength within the style of Taekwondo, just like the first rays of light shinning upon the student. Students with a yellow belt have already begun to master many techniques and are open to learning more.
Green Belt Just as a seed sprouting from the ground, a green belt is the sign of growth within the discipline. These students are refining all the techniques they have mastered as they progress further in their studies.
Blue Belt As a plant will naturally reach for the sky, the blue belt signifies the student reaching for higher ranks, growing taller just as the new plant. To continue the growth in mind and body students in this stage of Taekwondo will be given additional knowledge.
Red Belt The red of this belt signifies the heat of the sun which helps the plant grow. Knowledge of Taekwondo is what will allow students to progress to this rank. Students are also taught to see red as a caution to use the skills and techniques they have mastered carefully.
Black Belt This is the highest ranked belt. It is a sign of the darkness that exists beyond the sun. Students with a black belt can begin so share the knowledge they have acquired with other students. By passing on their knowledge to new students black belts continue the cycle of training.
