Shootfighting is one of the most popular and provocative martial arts styles around the world. This ancient form of self defense originated in Japan. While it is an excellent martial art to learn if you are interested in self defense it has gained its real popularity as a ring sport in professional shootfighting competitions throughout Japan and the Vale Tudo. Shootfighting is a very popular sport in Japan. The ring used for shootfighting is very similar to those used for wresting. The bout normally consists of rounds and also features a referee. This is a full contact sport which includes grappling and submission techniques. These bouts give fighters the opportunity to test their skills against some of the top fighters throughout Japan.

While shootfighting is most popular in Japan it is also popular in the United States. Two American shootfighters, Bart Vale and Ken Shamrock regularly appear in bouts in Japan. There is great passion demonstrated by the Japanese fans during the bouts. Shootfighting is a mixture of striking and grappling in both technique and form. Whether standing or on the ground, those trained in shootfighting will always be prepared. Many of the techniques taught in shootfighting are bone breaking. Students can achieve dramatic results by combining technique and strength. Shootfighting is much more than pit fighting, it also includes kicks, punches, and elbows. Matches can be brought to a speedy halt by practitioners who are either standing or on the ground. Submission locks which focus on a breaking a specific limb are some of the most deadliest forms of self defense. It is hard to find another martial art as exciting as shootfighting. Students are given techniques to end battles as quickly as possible, as well as the confidence and self esteem to perform well. Since this system of martial art was designed for the street there are no belt ranking systems.
