Which Martial Arts Style is Right for You?

There are many different styles of martial art that should be researched by someone looking to study. Many people are unsure about which martial art is right for them. Picking the right style from among the many can be very challenging.

It is not really possible to say that any one style of martial art is better than all the rest. There are so many different factors that go into each style that it is really impossible to determine which one is best. You can no really say that one style is better simply because it tends to win in competition settings.

You need to decide several things for yourself prior to beginning your study of a martial art. No matter which style you pick, learning a martial art can be very beneficial. No matter what your goals are almost all styles of martial art will teach you both self discipline and self defense.

Self Defense You can find dojos and martial arts school around the globe that place a very high emphasis on self defense. You are not very likely to learn the techniques you will need to protect yourself on the street from schools that focus on kata, forms, or light sparring. You need to find a style that offers challenging and comprehensive training if you really want to be able to protect yourself out in the world.

Fitness Many of the martial arts styles do not emphasis physical fitness, although many of them can help you get into shape. There are some styles, such as Tae Bo, which are geared toward physical fitness but based on marital arts techniques and styles. The martial arts are not really your best bet if physical fitness is your primary goal.

Fighting Ability Different martial arts styles will have their own unique techniques and skills when it comes to fighting ability. Many of the self defense oriented styles will place a large emphasis on fighting so that you have the skills you need in order to survive. Many of the martial arts styles teach you kata, movements, and forms. You will learn more about inflicting the maximum about of damage as quickly as possible from the self defense orientated styles.

Competition These styles of martial arts are about exhibiting the style and winning trophies. Your style of martial arts will be in large part determined by the competition that you choose. Some choices that you have in this area include a focus on grappling or striking skills, light or heavy contact, or fighting or showcasing kata.

Your first step in researching various martial arts styles is finding the local dojo in your area and determining what type of classes and styles are offered. You will find that most good schools will give you a chance to try out their programs by offering a couple of free classes or reduced rates for a couple of months. Good programs will also be willing to answer your questions and give you all the information that you need.

You can have lots of fun learning a martial art. Your choice among the hundreds of different styles out there may be limited by what is offered by the local schools in your area. Some of the martial arts styles that are most popular and therefore easiest to find include Tae Kwon Do, Kickboxing, Jiu-Jitsu, and Karate. It more difficult to find some of the less popular styles, including Kung Fu, Kenpo, Shaolin, and Shootfighting.

Once you are aware which styles are offered in your area you can do some research to determine which style may be the best match for you. Once you learn about the philosophy of a martial art it can make a huge impact on your life.
