The Secret Art of Pressure Point Fighting
There are many different styles of martial arts that incorporate the use of
pressure points. Below is a discussion of some of these styles.
Some forms of Chinese martial arts, called Dim Mak, train their practitioners in
the use of pressure points to either kill or disable their opponents.
Traditional Chinese medicine relies on the theory of energy paths called
meridians that travel throughout the body. It is thought that there are several
important acupressure points that lie along these meridians. One form of
traditional Chinese medicine that makes use of this theory is acupuncture. The
Chinese term for the energy that travels along these meridians is qi (pronounced
chi). When applied to martial arts the goal is to strike particular acupressure
points in a specific way to effect the movement of qi throughout the body. This
attack on the pressure points is said to have a variety of effects, including
negatively impacting particular body systems, weakening an opponent, or even
slowing down bodily functioning of an opponent to the point of death.
There are some who say that the tradition of Dim Mak is simply a myth. Other
people think it was a real form of sorcery that has been lost and therefore no
longer practiced. There are some who claim that its power is real and that they
can teach it in their marital arts schools. Since it is an extremely lethal
method those that claim to teach in only do so very rarely.
The art of attacking the pressure points on the body is called kyusho jitsu. A
variety of fighting sports, including boxing and jujutsu, utilize pressure
points. To be effective pressure points must be struck in the correct direction
and using the proper method, that make kyusho jitsu difficult to learn. While
this technique started in Japan, George Dillman is best known for it in the
western world as he is the one who worked to make it popular.
The pressure points used in acupuncture are the same as those used in martial
arts. The key is to strike them in the correct way to create your desired
impact. Some main organizations that are involved in this technique include
Dillman Karate International (DKI) and Hogan Karate International (HKI).
