Forms, or “Kata”
Forms are different from sparring in that the routines and patterns are predetermined and, while they may be an artistic rendering of combat, they are not designed for actual combat.
In the Japanese martial arts, forms known as kata refer to the performance and interpretation of both traditional and new routines. A student may perform these routines solo or with others and may be armed or unarmed.
Forms are different from sparring in that the routines and patterns are predetermined and, while they may be an artistic rendering of combat, they are not designed for actual combat. The well-known martial arts expert Jet Li is an example of a practitioner who has been especially successful in form-based wushu tournaments. In open competitions, the participants are judged by a panel of instructors at the master level who have backgrounds in more than one system of martial arts.
