Comparing Samurai Swords to European swords
Katanas are often thought to be inherently superior to European swords. This
belief can be seen most predominantly in movies and role playing games that
speak of the katanas superior qualities.
This belief, though widespread, is not entirely accurate and is based on
misunderstandings about both the use and manufacture of European swords.
Statistics that are often used compare both schools at their worst instead of
their best.
Making a sword was an incredibly expensive endeavor in Japan due to its low
supply of iron. This high cost meant that swords were in limited supply and the
sword smiths worked diligently to get the best results from the limited material
they had. There are many examples of excellent swords from Europe, including
Toledo steel swords produced in Spain. Europe had an abundance of iron, so this
material was often used in the mass production of lower quality swords. This
gave the Europeans a choice between either a high quality expensive sword or a
poorly made inexpensive sword. The Japanese on the other hand had to choose from
an expensive sword or going without.
Another reason that makes it hard to compare Japanese and European swords is
that many European swords were created for different types of combat. The katana
was designed to be effective against lightly armored opponents, as both its
weight and curvature make it an excellent cutting weapon. These same qualities
that make it an effective cutting weapon allow it to be damaged easily when
facing heavy armor and ineffective as a thrusting weapon. Many European swords
are not of a lower quality, just created for different purposes. Since these two
weapons were designed to be used in different ways it is nearly impossible to
establish the superiority of one over the other.
There have been, however, European swords throughout history that were designed
to meet the same light armored opponent battle conditions as Japanese swords.
These longswords and katanas both have a similar weight, between 2 and 3 pounds,
and were used for similar fighting tasks.
